As I spent much time in the medical profession, I have been asked and sometimes scolded about universal health care. Some people are angry that we don't have it and others feel that a country based on competition and free enterprise should never have it.
I have thought about this problem for years and have come to the conclusion that the whole problem is being looked at in the wrong way.
Instead of deciding whether we need universal health care or not, we should be thinking of what in our health care system needs improving and how we can integrate the entire health care system so that it can function and serve the American people productively and efficiently.
We need a system that encourages and rewards physicians to work in such a way that they strive to do their very best and most conscientious work.
The role of the nurse practitioner should be expanded so that we can bring medicine to more people at less cost.
The economic and health benefits of preventing rather than treating disease are so great that we should put huge emphasis in this area both from the physician and outside sources.
Medical equipment should be used more efficiently.
These are only a few of the ways that I think we should change the medical system. However, I believe that if we put an efficient system in place, we will be able to take care of those who need our service better and at a price that this country can afford.
