It has always impressed me that the age of reaching emotional maturity or as others say, growing up, has little to do with a persons chronological or physical age. Some are "grown up" before or during there teens while others live many years and die more a child than an adult.
So what attributes define one who has reached this stature in life. I think that one of the characteristics is almost contradictory in itself. A person should truly desire to grow into one who is aware that each day he or she has to continue to work towards this goal. Throughout their entire life the goal of growing up will be paramount on their minds but never fully achieved.
Growing up means that the feelings and thoughts of others are important in determining the actions of one who wishes to attain maturity.
It means helping those in need when asked and helping when one sees a need even when not asked.
It means that one takes responsibility for his or her decisions and actions. Their parents, friends, neighborhood, government are not responsible. Instead of others owning their decisions, they take the ownership.
It means kindness.
It means acting instead of only saying.
