Many years ago, I was having a discussion with a friend. The point in question was difficult to grasp, so I asked him to simplify it so that I could easily understand it. He replied that rather than dilute his views and possibly have them loose some of their essence, perhaps I should make the effort to bring myself to the level of the discussion.
It is true that in elementary classes one has to bring things to the elementary level. However, even at that level of challenge, elevating yourself to what is being presented should always be paramount.
In some ways this tells a little bit about life. Some people look for the easy way to learn, to be entertained, and to spend their days. Others use their lives always trying to climb the next challenge, read that more difficult book, and solve that impossible problem.
So what are those others looking for? I feel that inside of many of us is the desire to be the best that they can, to accomplish that which at first glance might seem impossible by going far beyond that which they thought they could do in past years.
They stumble and they roll backwards, yet they crawl bit by bit up a craggy mountain, the top of which they will never see.
Why do they do this? It is hard and frustrating, but along the way they find little spots to rest and look out to see where they started and what they accomplished. Each step up the mountain shows them new paths to knowledge, new visions, and changes their lives.
So, what is at the top of the mountain? Why is the path so hard and why will they never reach the top.
It is perfection. To some the trip destroys and frustrates.
To others, the trip itself is everything.
