It seems that these days a lot of very important concepts and even arguments are being influenced by religion and religious beliefs. Even though we live in a country where the separation of church and state are one of it's fundamental values, we have a religious freedom that has brought a very large number of religions and religious people to the United States. As a result, diverse places of worship are more common here that anywhere else that I have traveled.
Everyone whom I have heard speak about their religion either in person or on television, has either implied or spoken directly that their religion was the best. This is understandable. I cannot conceive that anyone would want to be a part of or say that they belonged to the second or third best religion in the world. People also say that their belief is the one true belief. Again, I would find it difficult to believe that someone would belong to a religion that professed that they preached the one false belief or that they subscribed to the one in eight or nine possibly true beliefs.
So which religion is really the best. That's for every one to answer in their own heart. However even though you have picked your religion, others have picked theirs as well, often with as much or more fervor than you or me.
What does all this lead up to? It leads to a few simple points .
We must appreciate that everyone beliefs are personal and important to that person. Because of this, they must be respected. No harm should ever be done to anyone because they feel differently than you for in doing this you denigrate the person and his beliefs in your eyes and yourself in the eyes of the world.
Every belief that I have learned about has at least these two things in common. They are honesty in your actions and treating your neighbor or fellow man with fairness, respect and caring.
That means that instead of looking down on peoples differences, we learn to appreciate them. Whether is looks, money, esteem, religion, or the many other things that make each of us different, each holds the opportunity to teach us and to help us grow.
