Many years ago, I was  invited to see the office of a friend of mine. He was distinguished by the fact that he was older than I  and had  immigrated to the United States as a young man. As the years went by, he became very successful in business and a community leader as well.

When the day came that I joined him at his business, I was immediately impressed by the wall behind his desk. On it were, many certificates of  honor, and appreciation for his community service and charity work. I commented on them and told him of my admiration for what he had accomplished.

The subject turned to government and to taxes. After a few minutes, he turned to me and said," Taxes are the very small price that I pay for the privilege of living in this great country."  

I never forgot those words. I was born here, he was not. I had a life of relative ease. He had a childhood and early adult years of hardship; and persecution.  

The way of life and freedom that we have here is taken for granted by many of us, yet it is desired almost as much as life itself by huge numbers of people in other places in the world.

At this moment, there are bitter debates and differences of opinion throughout our land. Despite this we must remember that we share a common purpose. We have a great heritage that was given to us by many, from the writers of the constitution to the soldiers who gave their lives for us.  We must not only preserve what was given to us, but we must nourish it so that we can give even a greater land our children
