The human body is probably the most elegant and reliable machine that is known on earth. It has a huge number of parts that must work well together and be able to change constantly from the womb through old age. They must be maintenance free and have a life span that sometimes can be greater than one hundred years. The organism must be self repairing and be able to defend itself  from trauma, disease and harm done through poor choice of food and drink.

Despite all of the challenges that our bodies face, most people in the United States live the biblically allotted time of three score and ten in good health and many live even longer.

None of can avoid accidents that are not our doing, certain cancers,  infections, or diseases of heredity. No matter how well people care for themselves, some of us will not live long lives.

However, for the majority of us, life can be lengthened and the quality can be better as well. All that it requires are a few simple things to do.

They are frequent moderate exercise, a healthy low carbohydrate diet with plenty of  vegetables, no smoking, cutting alcohol to one drink per day. learning how to manage stress, and a healthy, relaxed, and optimistic outlook on life.

One should try to prevent disease and should see his or her physician when they first notice something suspiciously wrong, rather than when things become intolerable. Many cancers are easy to cure early but impossible to cure late. Bacterial diseases are also much harder to treat late than early. These are just two reasons why preventive medicine and early diagnosis are very important.

All this seems simple but they demand  and describe a life style that must be lived all day every day. That may seem like a lot, but the rewards can be very great.
